Chris Assad leads the Biological
Computing tasks in the Bio-Inspired Technologies and Systems (BITS) group at
JPL, sponsored by the Intelligent Systems and CISM/Revolutionary Computing Technologies
program elements. These tasks involve modeling sensory-motor control algorithms
in vertebrate nervous systems, with the goal to apply biocomputing principles
for more intelligent, autonomous spacecraft and planetary explorers. Specific
projects include functional modeling of the cerebellum to perform dynamic state
estimation, computational models of fish lateral line systems for biomorphic
smart skins, and design studies of insect-like legged/winged microrovers.
